JD Sports massive DC expansion takes shape at Kingsway

Dividing Line

Work is well underway on the creation of an additional 630,000 sq ft of logistics space at JD Sports’ multi-million-pound distribution centre at Kingsway Business Park in Rochdale.

Leading “shed” specialist Winvic Construction Ltd have been contracted by Wilson Bowden Developments to build the extension for JD Sports. Work began earlier this year on what is the largest construction project in North West England in 2017.

The extension will include four internal mezzanine floor levels that will allow JD to increase the warehousing capacity at the distribution centre to almost two million sq ft. The building is due for completion early next year and will be fully operational in the autumn of 2018.

JD Sports, the branded sportswear and fashionwear retailer, opened their first warehousing and distribution facility at Kingsway Business Park in 2012. They have subsequently increased the warehousing capability at Kingsway to create a facility of 1.4 million sq ft that employs over 1,000 people.

This latest investment will support the growth of JD Sports and will provide a state-of-the-art distribution centre that supplies the company’s retail operations in the UK and Europe. Staffing levels are expected to increase to 1,200 personnel initially with the prospect for further growth in job numbers in future years.

Kingsway Business Park is one of the leading business parks for logistics operations in the North West with direct access to the motorway network at J21 of the M62. It is supported by the local labour market that has double the proportion of residents working in warehousing and transport operations than the national average.
